In the lead up to the 2016 election, artist Jason Wyman put a call out through social media to his friends and acquaintances to send him a statement about an issue crucial to them, a link to more information about that issue, and a selfie. Wyman then drew their portraits, transcribed their stories by hand, read the articles they shared, and posted it all to Instagram and Facebook. It deepened his understanding of issues from voting rights to incarceration of youth to marijuana policy and personalized the political. It was thus that the #PersonalIsPolitical Series was born.
Artist Wyman thought the the series would end once the election was over. But the outcome of the election ignited his passion for this project, and he committed to continuing the project indefinitely because there is a need for even more conversation about the political issues and policies that affect his community of communities. . The #PersonalIsPolitical bears witness to personally political truths in the hopes make significant and long-lasting cultural shifts towards compassion, equity, and understanding. |
